Compressed natural gas (CNG) has long been popular with commercial feet owners, but the lack of a widespread refueling infrastructure in the U.S. poses some headaches. General Motors hopes a new bi-fuel option for the 2013 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra HD pickup trucks may help fill that void. 
This isn’t General Motors’ first full-size pickup that’s capable of running on both CNG and gasoline (such a vehicle was offered in the late 1990s), but it is the first developed from the company’s current GMT900 range of trucks. The bi-fuel option modifies the existing 6.0-liter V-8 engine so that it can run on CNG. According to GM, the transition from gasoline to CNG is seamless, and using both fuels allows a Silverado/ Sierra 2500 HD to have a total range of about 650 miles. 
Ordering a bi-fuel Silverado and Sierra is a lot like ordering any other full-size General Motors pickup, although some options are restricted. All Bi-fuel trucks will be extended cab models equipped with the 6.0-liter V-8 and a six-speed automatic transmission. Customers will be able to specify two- or four-wheel drive, 2500 or 3500 model range, and bed length. Seeing as the CNG tanks eat up a bit of cargo space within the bed, we’d recommend opting for the longer eight-foot bed.
All 2013 bi-fuel Silverado and Sierra models will be built within GM’s assembly plant in Fort Wayne, Indiana, but the addition of the CNG fueling system will be performed off-site by a tier-one supplier. Despite this, GM says the completed vehicle — CNG system and all — will be covered by the standard 3-year/36,000-mile warranty, along with its 5-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty.

GM marketing chief thinks there are only two truck companies: Chevy and Ford
The Super Bowl ad for the Chevrolet Silverado shows that the rivalry between Chevrolet and Ford still rages strong. But is there room for another brand or two to mix it up in the battle for pickup supremacy? Not according to General Motors marketing chief Joel Ewanick. 
Fox News reports that Ewanick said during a web chat on Jalopnik that “the two big players are Ford and Chevy.” Ewanick added that it’s like a presidential debate, saying “We want to have it with the other strong candidate – and we want to engage them and want them to engage us.”
A quick look at the numbers shows that Ewanick has a point. The Ford F-Series was the top dog in 2011, with 584,917 trucks sold. The Silverado came in second with 415,130 sales, but if you add the nearly identical GMC Sierra, General Motors makes the battle much closer with 564,300 unit sales. That’s more sales than the Toyota Tundra, Ram full-size and Nissan Titan combined (even without the Sierra.)
The Ram, also an excellent pickup, finished a distant third with a reported 244,763 sales. Still, Ram brand spokesperson Dave Elshoff insists that Ram trucks remain part of the equation, adding “across much of the west – where trucks are worked hard – it’s Ram that’s either number one or two in market share.”
We’re not so sure that the truck battle is Chevy versus Ford and then everybody else, but it sure is nice to see GM and Ford getting a little chippy. It’s a good bet that the chatter grows louder as the next generation Silverado and F-150 hit the auto show circuit in about a year.

Although Chevrolet has produced a pickup truck since 1918, the truck never received a formal name until 1999 at which point it was dubbed the Silverado. (“Silverado” was formerly the name of a trim level that dated back to the 1970s.)

As Chevrolet celebrates its 100th anniversary, the origin of the brand’s emblem, called the bow tie, remains a mystery.
One story says GM founder and Chevrolet co-founder William Durant saw the symbol on wallpaper in a Paris hotel. “The Chevrolet Story,” an official history published in 1961, says Durant ripped off a piece to bring home and remind him it would make a good emblem for a car. 
There’s no record of Durant admitting to that bit of vandalism, and his family members tell different stories. His daughter Margery wrote in 1929 that her father was a big doodler who idly created the shape during dinner “between the soup and the fried chicken.”
Some 60 years later, Durant’s widow, Catherine, said she thought her husband got the idea from the shape of coal briquettes called Coalettes he saw in a newspaper ad in 1912.
Another school of thought says Durant had nothing to do with it, and the bow tie is a stylized version of the Swiss cross Louis Chevrolet created to honor the land of his birth.
The bow tie made its first recorded appearance in a 1913 Chevy ad.
